Help Someone for Free
A week ago, I blogged about volunteering at CICOA. On Monday, January 28, I actually started my volunteering. The first thing I did was data entry. CICOA delivers meals to elderly folk and are asked to donate a gift in return for the meals. The recommended gift is $2 per meal. Most people write checks for the entire month. Then the finance people will deposit the checks and give a copy of the deposits to the development team. The development team will then record the gift information in a system. I am working with the volunteer team and my supervisor absolutely hates date entry. She is also quite behind on entering this information. I was able to get one packet of about ten done. By this point, I was afraid that I was going to fall asleep. At least the person sitting next to me was playing 90's music on Pandora. It's not really that bad, but most people would agree that data entry is boring. Then they had me put labels on envelopes. I had one hour to do this and it took me 15 minutes. Therefore, they had me go home early since they already logged me out of the data entry system. I go back again next Monday. I will probably do more data entry. I will probably split my time with searching for dead people, too. They also need helping going through obituaries and figuring out if those people are in their system so they don't send them anymore mail. It's kinda morbid...
